Learning to manage your website & content

Having complete control over your website is essential to maintaining a successful online presence.

Ensuring you have a confident grasp on how to manage your website is important to the running of your business. In this section of the Web Rocket, we will teach you how to manage the content on your website.

The tutorials are designed for the EOS CMS. Whilst the key editing requirements will be the same for any website, the methods will differ between other platforms. If your current website is built on a different platform, you will have specific guides for your admin area from your developer.

Learning how to manage your website - Let's get started!

So you've had a fantastic new website built? It looks amazing, it works great, and is soon ready to be launched to your adoring public. Now you need to drive that machine to success!

Your website is one of your most important tools for your digital marketing. So knowing how to use, update and manage it is critical. You should have complete control over your website via a Content Management System. In this stage of the Web Rocket, we are going to take you through the fundamentals of managing your website using the EOS CMS. This is the website software, developed here at Watman Worth Web, on which we build all of our clients' websites and systems.

EOS is completely browser based, meaning you can edit your website from anywhere, at any time, with no need for software downloads or updates.

We recommend taking a look over the EOS Feature Overviews before we get stuck in.

Please make your way through the stages of this guide to fully understand your admin dashboard, where and how to edit the various sections of your website, and using our training department to find useful resources and information.

Login to access your account

Please log in or create your Web Rocket account to access your resources and downloads. Once logged in, you will be able to view and download all resources and save your progress through the Digital Marketing Guide.

Step 1 - Log in to your website admin area

Let's log into your EOS website admin and explore the dashboard

Your EOS admin dashboard is where you will find all the controls to edit and update your website. You can log on from any browser at any time, update your content and publish it live to your website.

Your website developer will provide you with the link through which you can access your admin. They will set up a username and password for you to log in.

You can follow the instructions to log in to your website here.

Then you should take a tour of the dashboard here.

Once you have familiarised yourself with the admin dashboard, we can start looking at how to update and edit information and content across your website.

Let's start with confirming your company information. During your website build, your developer would have entered your relevant company details such as email, telephone number, address, and social media channels. These are the details that will be present on the website.

Check out this guide for updating your company information.

Once you have checked your company information, let's move on to look at the content editor.

Introduction to EOS CMS

Step 2 - Using the Website Content Editors

What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) with EOS

Wherever you come to edit content on your website in EOS, you will be using a simple content editor that allows you to format your text and upload images into your pages.

The CKEditor that you will be using has a similar feel to the likes of MS Office and various email editors that you may have used to format your content. It's nice and simple to use, and not overcrowded with endless buttons that will never be used!

This editor is the featured tool across all of your pages, products, categories, articles and more.

You can insert images, links, create lists and format text through one easy interface.

You can take a look at the content editor guide here to get a feel for how it all works.

Once you are happy with the overall features of using the editor, we will move on to creating and editing your pages.

Step 3 - Create / Edit Website Pages

Managing information & service based pages on your website

Your custom pages are a flexible tool on your website, allowing you to create service or information based showcases of text, images and interactive features, such as forms and downloads.

Using your EOS system, you can create an unlimited number of pages, and add these to your website menus as required to allow your users to navigate to them easily.

Each page has its own SEO controls, allowing you to target the page title and contents to specific keywords, and reach the people who are looking for your services.

Refer back to your website plan and sitemap to familiarise yourself with the types of pages you will require, and keep in mind the keywords they are targeted towards.

This section will teach you how to create, edit and manage your custom pages, and what features are available for use in your layouts and templates.

Step 4 - Category Management

Keep your content organised, so customers can browse with ease.

In your EOS content management system you can create categories with which to organise your pages, products, news, blogs, and collation listings.

This allows you to add browsing sections to your website where users will view only the items you assign, giving them relevant areas to find what they are looking for.

It's important to categorise your content effectively for a positive user experience, and can also be beneficial for SEO purposes to group related content all within one area.

A key example of this would be a clothing retail website which groups items into "tops", "trousers", "shoes", and "hats". This is applicable to many types of content and should be a part of your website plan and sitemap.

This section takes you through how to create, edit and manage your website categories.

Step 5 - Product Management

Managing your ecommerce product database

In your EOS CMS, managing your products couldn't be easier. You can browse, search, view, edit and delete all of your products through one easy to navigate hub.

Your products can make use of a series of ecommerce features, including;

  • Product Options
  • Bulk Buy Discounts
  • Stock Control
  • Product Reviews
  • Related & Recommended Items
  • Q & A Controls

This section will take you through the process of browsing and editing your products. You will also find specific information detailing how to use additional ecommerce tools and features in this area.

Step 6 - Listing & Article Management

Manage News, Blogs, Listings, and more.

Through your EOS website admin area, you have the ability to add, manage and edit any number of content types.

Your website may utilise a news feed, blog posts, directory entries, and listings.

These types of publications are a fantastic way of generating new, relevant content for your website to increase traffic and provide a comprehensive user experience.

As part of your Digital Marketing Plan, you will have prepared a selection of content that will be used to publish on your website and be shared across your social media channels.

This section will take you through the process of editing these types of listings and give you an overview of the types of features you may find present in these sections.

We recommend that you explore the Content Management section of the training department to understand the various listing types.

Step 7 - Website Menus

Mange your website menus to provide simple and easy navigation

As you produce content pages, categories and listings, you will want to make these accessible to your website visitors.

Typically, your website will have a main navigation menu and footer menus. You may have sidebars, secondary menus and mobile specific menus, depending on your website design.

Once you create your content, you will need to add these pages to your website menus.

We recommend that you refer back to the sitemap and structure outlined in your Digital Marketing Plan to ensure that you tier and organise your website menus accordingly.

This section will take you through the process of adding your pages, categories, and content to your menus.

Step 8 - Online Forms & Email Templates

Create online forms and manage your website email settings

Your website will have an online contact form, and may have additional enquiry/data-capture forms which will be used for visitors to submit information directly to you.

Through your admin area, you can manage these forms and the email templates that will be used to trigger automated responses and notification to your users.

Ecommerce websites will also use these auto-emails for order confirmations and status updates.

This section details how to manage your online forms.

You will also find guidance on how to update and edit your email settings and templates in the Training Department - Emails.

Step 9 - User Management

Manage all of your users in one simple hub

Your user management section is where you are able to browse, create, edit, delete or assume the user accounts on your website. Through this area you can manage both administrator and customer accounts.

  • Administrator accounts have access to edit your website.
  • Normal user accounts are front end accounts only. These accounts store your customer details, purchase history and information.

In this section you will learn how to manage these "User Accounts".

You also have the ability to check blocked IPs, set permissions for your admin users and view information about the activity of users on your website. To explore the different features and tools available, visit the Training Department - User Management.
